For today - Sunday February 27, 2011

On My Mind
...Tonight is the Oscars?  WOW - I didn't know that, feeling a little behind the times.  My kiddos spent the night at friends houses last night... and Jay went to dinner with a friend, so I was home alone, and I wasn't crazy about the silence.  I know I should have relished in the quiet, but instead it bothered me.  I'm not sure what that means... do I need more quiet time, so I don't feel that way, or does it just speak to the measure of which I love my family, and feeling uncomfortable with their absence is appropriate?

Outside my window... It's a wet, gray Sunday morning, with a thick fog wrapping itself around the trees in my backyard.  I'm looking forward to spring, I think I'm going to plant more trees and flowering bushes.

What We're Reading
... I'm reading the autobiography of Jean Nidetch, an overweight housewife with a self-confessed obsession for eating cookies - she experimented with so many fad diets but found little success.  She started to follow a diet plan sponsored by the New York Health Department, and contacted several overweight friends to create a support group in her own home when she found her resolve fading.  That support group grew into what we know today as Weight Watchers.

What I'm Listening to... I LOVE the CBS program "Sunday Morning" - I haven't watched it in years, but the past few weeks, I've taken back my TV and have rediscovered the beauty in storytelling with video, and not sure I'll allow the TV to be on anything else on Sunday mornings than this.

I am Hoping... the children were good house guests last night.  I'm hoping my efforts to get my weight under control continue.  I'm hoping mom and Jon arrive back in Connecticut safely this week from their trip to Houston.  I'm hoping to get back on the treadmill this week.

In the Kitchen... I have been going through the cabinets and pantry, going through the items we have, trying to ensure I have no pitfalls - yet have items the kids and Jay will want to eat.  I'll be making a monthly menu today for March - and I know I'll be making corned beef & cabbage sometime around the 17th.

Around the house... our kitties seem to find a love of tearing down the hallway and spinning the new throw rugs I've just put down.  Guess I'll be going out to find something to secure these to the floor better.  Just another reason why I'm disappointed with putting in laminate flooring.  If you are thinking about going with a new hard wood floor or laminate flooring, call me... it's not all it's cracked up to be.

Coming Up This Week
... We are looking forward to going to see Audry (our niece) play in a lacrosse match against KU this weekend.  Ethan and Jared are also attending KU, so we will be meeting the other members of Jay's family in Lawrence this weekend for fun, family & friends.

A Picture Thought... Katie keeps loosing her teeth - that precious baby smile is gone...
...and we have had so much snow here, that school has had to be extended by 10 minutes a day for the rest of the school year to make up for lost time.  But it doesn't look like Patrick & his best bud Daniel mind very much! Watching them has me traveling down memory lane, and all the snow days in Voluntown and how I played outside for hours without wanting to go inside.  I remember sliding down the hill behind the Catholic Church in Voluntown, or the big hill behind our house.  The memories are so vivid, I can recall the bite of the cold air, the sting of my fingers being so cold, and the warmth of the house when we did have to go inside.  I hope the memories they are creating will be remembered just as fondly as I do when I see their pink cheeks, and red noses.

On My Mind
...thank you notes done(check), school day tomorrow - clothes are layed out (check), coffee is in the coffee maker (check)...

Outside my window... The snow is melting, tomorrow... rain?

What We're Reading
...I finished "Agnes & The Hitman", funny little book.  Patrick is reading Harry Potter, "The Sorcerers Stone".  I told him I want to read it with him, but he doesn't want to wait for me, so he's already on chapter 8!

What I'm Listening to...the quiet hum of the humidifier.

I am Hoping... for a good night's sleep, won't happen if I don't close this computer soon.

In the Kitchen...I made a very nice pork tenderloin tonight that had a side of au jux.  Slow cooker is the way to go on busy days.

Around the house...everyone is alseep, it's just me, quiet time

Coming Up This Week
...a very busy week with lots of Youth Education planning happening at the Kansas Humane Society.

A Picture Thought...Katie celebrated her 6th birthday at the Kansas Humane society where she got to meet a 7 year old Pomeranian named Rose, who was as sweet as she can be and is looking for a home.

2010 Wrap UP

Wait! What? An entire year has gone by already? But I’m still trying to get over 2010!  Oh well, I guess it’s time to face the facts that one more year has zipped by as I sit here and try to remember all the cool stuff. Here goes!

Katie continues to enjoy dance and goes every weekend to the Wichita Children’s Dance Theater and takes acting and ballet as well. They wrapped up the first part of the year with a great musical called “Rock Around the Mouse.” She was great! (And we’re biased!) She is now in Kindergarten and her teacher says she is always smiling and singing. She’s actually looking forward to school each day. Oh how that will change when the classes expect more work and less play!

Patrick played T-ball again and had an awesome time! He was just about the fastest kid on the team and when he stopped throwing rocks and trying to tackle the runners, he actually did pretty well…good?…heck, great!  I’m the parent, I’m allowed to brag and/or embellish. He started the Second Grade. Wow! It seems like he was just in K-garten! He’s reading at a college level, or at least seems like it. He actually has to be told to put down a book and go play outside. Hmm. Sounds just like his Dad!

Patrick and Katie had a great summer. They spent so much time at different pools, that I think they grew gills! Each is a great swimmer and had a blast splashing and playing the days away.

My year was full of change as well. In August I left Open Arms Daycare where I had been the lead teacher of the Pre-Kindergarten class and was hired at the Kansas Humane Society to be their Director of Youth Education. It’s a new position and I'm having a blast teaching kids about animal safety, pet responsibility and how kindness and compassion towards all living things helps the world. Sounds like the perfect job for me, doesn’t it?

As part of the year of changes, Jay volunteered to take over the morning shift in late May, so now he’s working the classic grave yard shift. It helped us save money on daycare and he got to spend more time with the kids. But, the lack of sleep is tough to take. I hope the term “grave yard” shift doesn’t turn into a reality! He’s always seemed to suffered from a mild case of narcolepsy (LOL), but now he has a good reason to fall asleep at a moment’s notice..zzzzzzzzzzzzz. Just before we sent this, we found out that Jay’s morning show was ranked #1 in Wichita! We are very happy and hope this streak continues.

And it was a monumental year for both of us…as we hit the big 4-0! Was it just yesterday that we were both wearing acid-washed jeans and had long “big” hair? Time marches on, we’re just trying not to get trampled!

Resolutions for 2011... try to lose some weight, try to slow life down a bit, and try to get on this blog more often.  I'm going to be getting a new laptop, so I've got to remember all the places I want to hit on a daily basis... this is one I'm going to try to make it to more often.  I know I said that last year, but... hopefully, as with the other two resolutions, I'll try my best to be successful.

Monday 2/22/10

Had a great weekend visiting family in Larned over ghe weekend. Watched Jared play in his last home game for basketball...it was senior night so he was honored at the game. I hope to get some pics up soon. It's always nice to head out there and spend some time with Susan & Paul.

Thursday Feb. 18th

Patrick stayed home sick today. I prepared myself to speak to the communications students at the high school...made a small PowerPoint. Hopefully Patrick will be feeling better in the morning- so I won't have to cancel with the high school. I'm very excited about going! I'm praying that something extaordinary happens while I'm there tomorrow. I would LOVE to work there and inspire the same way I was in high school.

Wednesday 2/17

Patrick came home today and said he didn't feel good and then crawled up into my lap and wanted to go to sleep. This is not normal behavior for my fast paced 6 year old... so when I felt his head, it was no surprise to me to learn he had a fever. 102 declares nurse mommy! Staying home from school tomorrow! Poor kiddo. Breaks my heart to not see him feeling well.

Just checking to see if this new app I downloaded really does the trick. If it does... This is going to be great!
